California’s Great Beyond

Upper Owens River Gorge

  • Off Forest Service Road 4S43, off Hwy 395 (Swall Meadows).
  • Tom's Place, CA 93546
  • Phone: (760) 873-2500

Unseen from Hwy. 395 but massive in scale (300-700 feet deep) once you get there, Owens River Gorge offers world class rock climbing, hiking, and dramatic scenery. The upper section is known to rock climbers as the narrow section of the gorge, and known to fishermen as "the Middle Owens," with smaller fish but plenty of 'em. Access is slightly technical (expect dirt roads and hiking). From Hwy. 395 exit northeast about 30 miles south of Mammoth and one mile south of Tom's Place (Gorge Road).
