California’s Great Beyond

Minaret Lake Trail

Also called the Minaret Creek Trail, this is a 6.5-mile (one way) hike that offers a moderate to difficult challenge up to 9,500 feet. It reaches a beautiful setting where overnight backpackers find a lovely high-altitude lake (permit required) right under the iconic Minaret spires of the Ritter Range. The trailhead is located at Devils Postpile Visitor Center, where the John Muir Trail climbs above Minaret Falls. To reach the trailhead, all visitors ride a shuttle bus from Mammoth’s Main Lodge parking lot down into the valley floor (small fee applies). To extend the hike, look for Cecile and Iceberg Lakes.
