California’s Great Beyond

Lower Rock Creek Trail (section 4)

Lower Rock Creek Canyon is divided into sections, and has a following with springtime mountain bikers who come in and out of the sections as they join up with Lower Rock Creek Road. Hiking allows a slower approach to stop and listen to the creek flowing by. Access the lowest section, number 4, by exiting west of Highway 395 about 30 miles south of Mammoth and one mile south of Tom's Place (Gorge Road). Follow Lower Rock Creek Road, passing by a property, and looking for the fenced road and signed trailhead. This trail is also open to horseback riding and fishing. It sits at a lower elevation than much of the Eastern Sierra, making it relatively snow-free most of the year.
