California’s Great Beyond

Devils Postpile

Hiking to Devils Postpile is primarily about the destination, a stunning natural wonder: basalt columns that protrude from the forest just beyond this easy, well-maintained half-mile nature walk. It’s great for visitors who are short on time and/or energy. To extend the hike, continue on two miles to Rainbow Falls, where the hike is flat, with ample sun exposure. The reward is 100-foot Rainbow Falls, where the mist is a refreshing place to linger. All visitors ride a shuttle bus from Mammoth’s Main Lodge parking lot down into the valley floor (small fee applies). This is a high traffic trail; horseback trips are offered by the valley pack station.
