Did you know that the Eastern Sierra is one of the most geologically active regions in the US? Join Sierra Forever and Mono Lake Volunteers for a FREE Geology Walk to hike into a young volcano and learn more about the wild forces that shaped the area.
When: Saturdays and Sundays at 10:00am
Where: Meet at the Panum Crater Trailhead kiosk. To get to Panum Crater, take Highway 395 and turn on Highway 120 East (like you’re going to South Tufa). Continue on Highway 120 for three miles until you see a dirt road with a small brown sign that says Panum Crater—turn left on that road. The parking lot is located just 1 mile down the road.
What: The walk is about 2 miles and includes about 200 feet of elevation gain on a soft, sandy trail.
All ages are welcome on all of our hikes, but children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
We recommend dressing in weather appropriate layers, having sun protection such as hats and sunglasses, wearing comfortable walking/hiking shoes, and bringing a small pack with water and snacks.
