Timing is Everything!

While Mother Nature sets the schedule (and likes to keep us guessing!), these tips will help you be in the right place at the right time to catch Mono County at its most brilliant. Fall color in Mono County typically begins in mid to late September and continues well into October, with colors peaking at different times depending on elevation. High-altitude areas like Rock Creek Lake and Virginia Lakes usually turn first, followed by mid-elevation favorites like the June Lake Loop and Conway Summit.

  1. Color changes vary by elevation, so follow the fall color wave "downhill" - from higher altitudes at the beginning of the season to lower elevations later in October.

  2. Be flexible with your dates—fall color is weather-dependent and can shift slightly from year to year.

  3. Weekdays are quieter, making it easier to enjoy the scenery at a more relaxed pace.

  4. Lighting makes all the difference. Backlit leaves glow with incredible luminosity, so pay attention to time of day and the direction of the sun. And don't overlook overcast days—they often reveal a softer, richer palette with beautiful depth and saturated color.

  5. Follow the water to find the color. Brilliant stands of aspens often line mountain creeks, like those around the June Lake Loop, and along rivers such as the West Walker. Scan the mountainsides for winding ribbons of gold, then explore riverbanks and lakeshores, where some of the most vibrant displays are often found.
