Look closely as you drive along Highway 395, near Crowley Lake and you can see evidence of the first tow rope setup in the Eastern Sierra. Dave McCoy, who eventually developed Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, begin his skiing empire in 1938 here on McGee Mountain. The set up consisted of a gasoline enginer a tow rope and a set of pullies.

The spot was near a highway and always had winter snow. He packed up and moved to Mammoth Mountain in 1941.

Both the Mammoth Mountain and June Mountain Ski areas offer some of the best skiing in the Western United States.
