Join the Mono Basin Historical Society on July 30 - 31 for the 7th Annual "Ghosts of the Sagebrush Tour" and explore the history of Mono Basin. This year the focus of the tour will be on the year 1940, when the tunnel under the Mono Craters was completed, the Grant Reservoir dam and the conduits connecting the Reservoir to Lee Vining Creek and the tunnel were finished, and the West Portal constuction camp (a small city - see DWP Archives photo) was shut down.
Friday, July 30th, 6pm – Dinner at the Lee Vining Community Center with swing-era music and dancing.
Saturday, July 31st, 10am to 4:30pm -- Ghosts of the Sagebrush Tour: Grant Dam and West Portal Construction Camp sites. 10 – 11:30am: Meet at the Old Schoolhouse Museum in Gus Hess Park, Lee Vining to hear Guest Speakers' recollections of 1940. Picnic Lunch provided. Afternoon: Carpool to Grant Lake dam overlook and on to West Portal – Speakers, Photographs, Tour of the old construction camp site.

The Coldwater campground area has three trailheads: Duck Pass, Heart Lake/Consolidated Mine and Emerald Lake/Sky Meadow. These popular trails see lots of use and are in need of continued maintenance. Organized by the Eastern Sierra Cultural Heritage Alliance, an exhibit about Nellie Bly O'Bryan and her Upside-Down House will be on display at the Old School House Museum in Lee Vining beginning May 28 through the summer season. Nellie Bly O'Bryan was a visionary, entrepreneur, and long time resident of the Mono Basin. Originally located along US 395 north of the Tioga Lodge, the "house" was inspired by two childrens' stories – "Upside Down Land" and "The Upsidedownians." Upon her death in 1984, the Upside-Down House fell into disrepair until it was rescued and moved to its current site in October 2000. The house became Mono County's first man-made tourist attraction in 1956.
