Ride with the wild mustangs - yes, you!

This weekend is the kickoff to the Wild Mustang pack trip rides in the Eastern Sierra.

Need a good campfire tale? While everyone else is fishing Crowley Lake or skiing the last weeks of snow at Mammoth Mountain, this less-traveled adventure will be the talk of the party around the campfire or the hot spring.

The trips are guided and run through May and June. Many don't know that the Eastern Sierra has wild mustang herds that roam the sagebrush and run free through the sunny high desert meadows. With Rock Creek Pack Station and June Lake's Frontier Pack Train horseback riding trips you can saddle up for two days.

"Tioga Road in Yosemite National Park, one of America's most beautiful mountain highways, is likely to open this week over 9,943-foot Tioga Pass," reports Tom Stienstra, one of the world's most in-tune journalists covering Yosemite and the San Francisco Chronicle's outdoors writer.

His speculation comes just two days after "Yosemite's back door" opened to bicycle traffic on April 28, 2012.

Vehicles are not yet permitted to drive this road into Yosemite National Park until a further announcement. Road work, repairs and rock removal are just a few of the things that still need to be done.

Tioga Pass Updates: NPS.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tioga.htm.

"The snowpack at Tuolumne Meadows was measured at 16 inches, 43 percent of normal. All high-mountain lakes are still frozen, of course... If rangers open Tioga Road this week, it would be the earliest opening since 1988..." reports Stienstra.

In more Yosemite News, the Yosemite Area Rapid Transit System -- "YARTS" -- has added more routes to its Eastern Sierra operation. In July and August 2012 ride round trip between Lee Vining and Tuolumne Meadows for just $5, three times daily. Visit YARTS.com for the complete schedule and fares.
