Tons of Trout Stocked in the Eastern Sierra

03/31/2010

Bridgeport, CALIF – Tons of rainbow trout have been stocked in Eastern Sierra waters since last fall, according to Mono County aquaculturist Tim Alpers who predicts opening day (April 24) of the fishing season will be as good in the Eastern Sierra as it has ever been.  "We put 4,000 pounds of Alpers trout in area streams and lakes since last fall and DFG has put in a lot more," said Alpers.

"About the same amount of fish stocked last year to this point have already been stocked, so there are plenty of fish to carry the first month of the season, even if no additional stocking occurs," said Alpers who was responding to concerns that anglers are canceling plans to be in the Eastern Sierra for opening day.  "If it were me, I'd get back on the phone and make sure my reservation was in place, because there will be the same amount of fish as in previous years," he confirmed.

Confusion among anglers arose following the California Department of Fish and Game's (DFG) decision that it would withhold stocking fish in some California waters until the waters are evaluated for their potential impact on the Willow Flycatcher, a species of migratory bird.  Several of the major lakes and all streams in Mono County have now been authorized for stocking.

Alpers explained, "(DFG) heavily stocked a lot of our waters last fall and has been feverishly working to get them open by summer."  Regardless of DFG's temporary hold on additional stocking in some waters, every lake and stream in the Eastern Sierra will be open for fishing on opening day.  Among the spots now cleared by the DFG for additional stocking include: Bridgeport Reservoir, Convict Creek, Crowley Lake, Grant Lake, Lundy Lake, Mammoth Creek, McGee Creek, Rock Creek, Saddlebag Creek, Topaz Lake and the West Walker River.   A complete list of waters cleared for additional stocking is found online at www.monocounty.org/fishing.

"We had our stocking permits in place long before the question of the Willow Flycatcher arose, so we had already planted several of the most fished waters.  The bulk of the stocking doesn't even happen until Memorial Day, as the upper lakes are frozen over until then.  So fishing at this year's opener will be what you would have seen, anyway," said Alpers.
