WOMEN OF EASTERN CALIFORNIA

CELEBRATED IN EXHIBITS AND LECTURES

Women of Eastern California will be celebrated, March through September, at a series of lectures and exhibits coordinated by the Eastern Sierra Cultural Heritage Alliance (ESCHA).  The series includes varied depictions of accomplished native and pioneering women who contributed to the history of Eastern California, its deserts, plains and the High Sierra.

Included are: an exhibit on Northern Mojave and Indian Wells Valley women seen at the Maturango Museum in Ridgecrest, depictions of the lives of pioneering women of the Mammoth Lakes area at the Mammoth/Mono Lake Ranger District in Mammoth Lakes, descriptions of notable pioneering women from Inyo County at the Eastern California Museum in Independence, portrayals of women in motion pictures at the Beverly and Jim Rogers Museum in Lone Pine, an exhibit on the contributions of Sally Gaines at the Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitors Center in Lee Vining, Nellie Bly and Her Upside Down House at the Mono Basin Historical Society in Lee Vining, chronicles of the lives of Mammoth area women at the Mammoth Ranger Station and Visitor Center in Mammoth Lakes, stories of Mono Basin Native American Women at the Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitors Center in Lee Vining, and an exhibit about the life of Olympic champion and conservationist Andrea Mead Lawrance at the Mammoth Ski Museum in Mammoth Lakes.

Seventeen ESCHA organizations, including museums, visitor centers, historic sites, and interpretive groups, are participating.  Through exhibits, lecture series, and programs, the intriguing and often untold stories of the women represented are described, highlighting the roles women played in the formation and development of the Eastern California region.

ESCHA is a network of museums and visitor centers along the U.S. 395 corridor within Inyo, Mono, and portions of eastern Kern Counties.  The mission of ESHCA is to generate and enhance awareness, appreciation, and preservation of natural and cultural resources through interpretation and education for visitors and residents of the Eastern Sierra.  Dates and descriptions of the exhibits and lectures can be found online at www.eschainfo.org and www.monocounty.org.
